Hilton Head, Beaufort and Yemassee: Weekending

Good Morning!

It has been raining all night but, thankfully, we had amazing weather this weekend for our trip down to Hilton Head. My Dad and stepmom had a week at a condo and invited us down for the tail end of their time. My husband had to work, so my son, daughter, her friend and I headed out Friday after school for a fun weekend.

We enjoyed a walk on the beach Saturday morning.
 Played some shuffleboard...
The kids had fun in one of two heated pools while I enjoyed sitting in the sun.
At night, we headed over to the Dove Street Festival of Lights at Shelter Cove Town Centre.
We swung by the Hilton Head Fire Department's drive-thru light display. I was driving so I could only grab a picture at the end.
We then headed back to the resort and roasted some marshmallows at the fire pit.
I loved all the lights and decorations the resort had around the main office.
Yesterday we had to be out by 10 so we got up and headed to Beaufort. It was our first time going so we decided to head for Waterfront Park.

We grabbed smoothies inside Common Ground, a cute coffee shop on the edge of the park. There were lots of other restaurants there too but since it was early Sunday, they were all closed.
After letting the kids play on the large playground, we got back in the car and headed about 30 minutes north to the Old Sheldon Church ruins.

The church was burned by the British Army in 1779, rebuilt and then burned by the Federal Army in 1865. The ruins are often photographed and painted (there was an artist painting when we arrived) and if you are a member of the Parish Church of St. Helena in Beaufort you can be married there! Isn't it stunning?

Have you been to Beaufort? Any suggestions for my next trip? I definitely want to go back when all the little shops are open.

Where's Karl? {Review}

I recently received a copy of Where's Karl?: A Fashion-Forward Parody by Stacey Caldwell and Ajiri A. Aki from Blogging for Books to review. All opinions are my own.

I grew up with Where's Waldo? books and always loved hunting for Waldo in the dizzying pictures. So when I saw Where's Karl? and that it is centered around Karl Lagerfeld and includes many other famous fashion and pop-culture faces, I knew I had to check it out.

The book's introduction is written by a fictional blogger (how appropriate?!) named Florence de la Sabine (aka Fleur). Fleur is pretty much obsessed with Karl and is going to travel around the world looking for him from Milan to Paris and so on.

Each place Fleur travels to is two pages of illustrations by Michelle Baron. There are so many recognizable faces within each illustration. Toward the back of the book, there is a checklist of people other than Karl to look for too.

I loved seeing the girl with the TCU shirt in this illustration. I lived in the Fort Worth area for years and have several friends who went to school there (the authors both attended as well).

This book was a big hit with everyone in my family, including my husband and son. We all enjoyed the friendly competition of finding Karl first. My mom picked it up while she was over for Thanksgiving and spent her entire breakfast looking for Karl.

If you're a fan of fashion or celebrities, this is a fun book to have. It would also make a great gift for a fashion loving friend!

Have you see this book before? Do you own it? What do you think about it?

Weekending

Happy belated Thanksgiving!
Hope everyone had a great weekend with family and friends.

My mom came up and we did some exploring with the kids since the weather was gorgeous.

We went to the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site in Mount Pleasant on Friday.

Grabbed some lunch at Zoes Kitchen...

and then went shopping at Mount Pleasant Town Center

After shopping, we accidently found Daniel Island Waterfront Park
It was a nice little park with swings right on the Wando River. There was also a fishing pier and trails. I loved this turtle fountain!

On Saturday, we headed to one of my favorite parks, Riverfront Park in North Charleston.

It was a perfect day to walk along the Cooper River!

After the park, we headed downtown for lunch at Black Bean Co. on King Street.

We then did some shopping on King Street and walked through the campus of the College of Charleston.  I have lived here for THREE years and I had never walked the block over from shopping to see the campus!! Ugh!! It is just so pretty!

The pictures really don't do it justice. I've been on a lot of college campuses and this was definitely one of my favorites of all time. I recommend going on a Saturday when there aren't many people around so you can take pictures :)

How was your weekend? Do anything fun?

Weekending

We had a pretty relaxing weekend.
On Saturday morning, my mom came into town and we spent a lot of time walking some land she is thinking about putting an offer in on.

We also spent some time researching plants that keep mosquitoes away because they were everywhere. I didn't get bit but my poor mom had like 5 bites on her face!

After our walk in the woods, we headed to Perfectly Frank's for lunch.
I attended the Charleston Food Film Festival recently  and was in the mood for another yummy Frank Cuda dog.

After eating, we headed over to look at some model homes so my mom could get some ideas for the house she is going have built.

Sunday was spent making pumpkin pancakes, baking cookies and staying in my pjs all day watching football.
How was your weekend? Anything fun planned for this week?

five on friday

one.

Depending on where you live, you might not have heard about Megan Hiatt (above holding her twin babies). Megan, with the help of her father Jimmy (a friend of my mom's), was moving out of the house she had been sharing with her 5 month old twins and (ex) boyfriend while the boyfriend was at work. A family member of the boyfriend contacted him, apparently, and let him know she was packing up. The boyfriend left work early (he was in the Navy), came home, shot and killed Jimmy, forced Megan to hold her babies while he shot and killed them, shot Megan multiple times and then shot and killed himself.

Megan is going into her 5th surgery today. A friend of the family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses. There is also another page set up to help with Jimmy's funeral and burial expenses. You can read more about what happened here, though there are some inaccuracies in the article.

two.

I made this Chocolate-Bourbon Pecan Pie (also called a Kentucky Bourbon Pie) this week and it was amazing. I used Maker's Mark bourbon because I read that was the best one to use.

three.

My husband and I visited Hampton Park in downtown Charleston the other day. It has a running/bike lane around the park plus plenty of walking paths within the grounds. We really liked it and will definitely be back.

four.
My husband tried out Anna Bell's a few weeks ago in North Charleston with some buddies from work and he hasn't stopped talking about it so we made a stop on Wednesday. I had the Southwestern burger and it was pretty good. I especially love their seasoned fries.

five.
I have been wearing this necklace non-stop that I got from my bestie back in Texas for my birthday. Now I just need the matching earrings ;)

Hope y'all have a great weekend!
